The lush green of Emerald is representative of life and springtime. In Ancient Rome, it was the color that symbolized the beauty and love of the goddess Venus and was worn to enhance love and contentment. They were used as amulets to ward off epilepsy in children and thought to cure diseases of the eye. Folklore suggests these stones will improve memory, intelligence, and can help predict future events.
Emerald is the modern and traditional birthstone for May as well as for those born under the sign of Virgo. It is also the suggested stone for the 20th and 35th anniversaries.
Emerald is the green variety of the Beryl family and can be found in many countries including Afghanistan, Columbia, Pakistan and Brazil . Their incomparable dark green color is produced under extremely rare conditions which result in tiny inclusions within the stone. Because of this most emeralds are “oiled”, a process in which the stone is immersed in oil to reduce the visibility of the inclusions and improves the clarity. Avoid exposure to heat, contact with chemicals and protect them from scratches and harsh blows. It is best to clean them with a soft toothbrush and a solution of mild dish soap and warm water. They should never be placed in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
